THE MISSION:
The mission of the YLan Sweet Dreams Foundation is to help promote women’s health issues in the Vietnamese-American community, especially among those who are underserved where there’s heightened need to educate and inform, and encourage women in efforts toward early detection of breast cancer and other related health conditions.

THE STORY:
For who knows YLan, you are familiar with her many efforts to help others, including fundraising for various charitable causes. YLan Sweet Dreams Foundation is a charitable cause founded by YLan to lend her celebrity status to help promote women’s health issues. In particular, the issues of early detection of cancer, cancer awareness education and women's health awareness. From her own experience, she recognizes how cancer can be feared as a social stigma and hinders early detection and effective treatment.
YLan, the mother of four daughters and two sons, envisions YLan Sweet Dreams Foundation to be a continuing legacy for her children and the next generation of Vietnamese-Americans, to encourage youths to engage in the service of others.

Cancer only happened to others, or so I thought.
Until, in late 2003, after doctors diagnosed a cancerous lump on my left breast, which I had discovered upon self-examination.
I underwent two lumpectomies and radiation therapy.
For a long while, I kept the news close to myself and my family, being uncertain of the future and worrying for my six children, wondering if I would ever recover enough strength to take care of them and also continue my singing career. But today, I am strong again. Thankfully, I am now "cancer free".
Today, more than ever, my heart is filled with gratitude.
To God, who surely watched over me when I left my beloved Vietnam as a boatperson adrift at sea, and watches over me even today—I, a "cancer survivor".
To my trusted medical team for their professional, compassionate care.
To my family, for their steadfast love which sustained me.
I am grateful to the many devoted fans who prayed for me and encouraged me, showing their concern, supporting me in different helpful ways.
Now, I’m able to acknowledge publicly and share with you the ordeal I experienced by establishing the YLan Sweet Dreams Foundation (YSD Foundation).
The foundation’s "sweet dreams" theme is rooted in the lyrics of a favorite song by my uncle Pham Duy: “Tôi đang mơ giấc mộng dài…Đừng lay tôi nhé!”, which is also the title of the CD I just released at the end of 2007. A portion of the proceeds from the CD sale will be committed to funding the establishment of YSD Foundation.
I hope through YSD Foundation, we can help to inspire one another, and encourage one another to live out our life’s "sweetest dreams" no matter what comes our way.
